Men of Steel

Two days ago while I was travelling in train back to Kgp I read this book "Men of steel". It’s the most simplest and highly interesting book that I have read in recent times. This is a book written by Mr Vir Sanghvi. He is considered as the best know Indian journalist. This book consists of detailed profiles of some of the highly  successful business men of India like Ratan Tata, Nandan Nilekani, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Azim Premji and many more.

One significant difference between most of other books and this is, Sanghvi had accumulated all the personal interviews which he has taken for the Hindustan times into one place. In none of the profile sanghvi talks about the business world or the fancy magic numbers concerned to modern business development. He mostly focuses on the unseen personal  lives of those big shots. He mostly wrote about each persons background, their early beginning, their set backs, how they fought with their problems in life and reached to the position where they are today.

I should say that this is not just a book with information, I would rather say it’s a book with lot of inspiration.  I would recommend this book to all those who are looking to do something big in life, to all those young minds who are aspiring to become the next generation entrepreneurs.

I am just copying here two of the quotes from the book:

  • Subhash Chandra - Chairman ZEE telefilms and essel group

"I am an entrepreneur. I know that I can create something from nothing".

  • Vijay Mallya - Chairman UB group

"I don’t want to be Richard Branson. I want to be Vijay Mallya".

I have another book in hand "LOOSE- The future of business is letting go" by Martin Thomas. I will write more about it as soon as I finish it.

When all the attractive things seem boring....

After coming to IIT i have realised that IIT is not only a very gud place to study, but its also a very gud place to have fun. I was very much packed during my first semester, so it was not possible to have all the fun... I always wished for some free time so that i would watch lot of movies from  DC++, play battle field with my friend over the LAN, spend some quality time on learning guitar, learn some new programming languages etc.

Now unbelievably the time has come, after finishing my semester exams i have been really free. i have got all 24 hours in a day to do what ever i want. So i started enjoying life to the best, for the past 10 days. I would have watched almost 40-45 movies. Played battlefield for some time(but not on LAN because of some IP issues).Spent lot of time in sleeping, lot of time in chatting, lot of time in playing table tennis and caroms. But now after the 10 days i am feeling completly bored. Wat all i thought as 'real fun', is actually making me now feel very bored and dejected. I am so surprised, now i am feeling  restless to watch a movie.

So one thing which i can make out is full time studying is much better and gives more fun than full time enjoying. So i think one should be more balanced and more careful in managing time when he is completely free than when he is overloaded with work. Its like one needs to give equal importance to things which are very attractive and which are non attractive.

which in my case means i should have given equal importance to very attractive things - "movies, games" and non attractive things - "learning guitar, learning new programming language", which i haven't given.

Hence the realization is, i would have the satisfaction of having 'real good fun' only if i can spend my rest of the vacation by finding a balance between above mentioned activities. That would be one way to avoid this dejection...

So, will try it out and let u know if i have succeeded, in my future journal posts.

Working On "Super Resolution" - 1

I have been working on Super Resolution from past few days, as it is my winter project which is supposed to be finished by the end of December. My guide told me to understand the topic and get some clear in sight on the topic by 9th of this month. so that he would give me more info on the problem statement which i have to solve.

From the past few days of my study, I have found out few interesting points super resolution and i would like to share it. For obvious reasons this post is going to be little techie.

By basic definition super resolution is the processes of obtaining high resolution image from a set of low resolution images depicting the same scene. To explain the same in little non tech language, it is a process of obtaining a high clarity image of a scene from a set of low clarity images of the same scene which were taken by a low quality camera in an interval of time.

So in order to get a high resolution image from low resolution image we usually do interpolation (bilinear, bi cubic etc). But the problem with doing interpolation is after interpolating an image we lose the sharpness of the image or the over all image looks blurred as compared to the actual scene. To avoid this problem Super resolution will be one of the best choices. In few cases super resolution can be considered as applying interpolation on more than one image. But there are several other cases where super resolution is completely different form interpolation.

Super resolution can also be applied on videos.Videos are nothing but a set of frames, and in a video each scene is depicted by a set of images. Hence we can use these set of images to get high resolution images.
This can be applied for upscaling a standard definition video into a high definition video. This is how the old movies which were shot with normal cameras can still be converted to HD.

Figuring out a first topic

How to start writing a blog?? This is the question which kept on pausing me from writing a blog... When ever we start something new in life this problem is always there "The Starting Problem".

Finally i found out a solution for this today. That is, to over come this problem first u need to stop thinking and start doing... So, today i am starting to write my blog, and from now onwards there wouldnt be space for that question in my mind, coz i have already started writing :)

Just to begin, i wanted to say my perspective about blogging.

If some one asks me Why do people BLOG?? Then my one line answer would be :
" If you have so much to say and dont know who is there to listen then the right place is a blog"
